Announcing the Versatile Test Reactor (VTR) Request for Applications (RFA) Updated

June 11, 2018

Battelle Energy Alliance, LLC (BEA), the managing and operating contractor for the Department of Energy's Idaho National Laboratory (INL), is seeking applications from universities to develop experiment device concepts, advanced simulation tools, and big data capabilities to support development of advanced nuclear energy systems through testing in a fast neutron test reactor. The concepts and tools are envisioned for use in a nominal 300 MWth sodium-cooled fast reactor with a fast neutron flux of > 4 x 10^15 n/cm2-sec. The concepts would be used to test advanced reactor fuels and materials as required for advanced reactor technologies that may use alternate coolants including molten salt, lead/lead-bismuth eutectic mixture, gas, and sodium.

The response date is June 29, 2018.  Additional information is available at https://www.fbo.gov/index.php?s=opportunity&mode=form&id=3004bab0a97fcda55ddfb40a1876ad63&tab=core&_cview=0

Updated VTR request for application. The following changes have been made:
  1. Section 3 was modified to state the following, "This RFA covers the first year of a projected 3-year VTR R&D program. Fiscal year (FY) 2018 is estimated to have $3 million for R&D awards under this solicitation announcement. Approximately 6-8 awards of $300-$600k each are expected. It is anticipated that similar awards will be available in FY 2019 and FY 2020."
  2. Language was added to the last two bullets of Section 5.4 to indicate R&D will be funded one year at a time with a maximum of three years and costs are limited to $600K per year.
  3. Removed the line at the end of Section 5.5 (clarifying this is a call for full proposals).
  4. Note: Narrative responses to the RFA are limited to three pages as indicated in the table in Section 6.4.
