The NRDS system is available for Nuclear Energy University Program Research & Development Projects.
NRDS is a public-facing, long-term data storage solution and science data gateway. NRDS makes publicly-funded data from Nuclear Science User Facilities and NEUP research accessible to the public without requiring a paywall or account.
Every uploaded document and data set is assigned a digital object identifier (DOI). Data is stored on compute resources and NRDS provides long-term data retention.
NRDS is operated out of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy’s NSUF program and the High Performance Computing (HPC) center at Idaho National Laboratory.
NRDS Research Portal: How does NRDS work?
NRDS is split into two different environments: a Research Portal as a workspace for project collaboration and a public site where all data resides after embargo expiration.
NRDS Research Portal – nrds-portal.inl.gov
The NRDS Research Portal is available at no cost to awarded Principal Investigators (PIs) and collaborators for uploading data and using machine learning models (see examples). NRDS hosts both data storage and compute capability, including a virtual desktop for ease of uploading files. An NEUP or NSUF user login authentication is required.
Other features include:
- Private workspace for data uploads, supporting collaboration among project users
- Metadata collection and digital object identifier (DOI) curation
- Access to integrated computing resources including AI-enabled hardware and graphics processing units (GPUs)
- PI-managed data embargo dates prior to public release on the NRDS public site
- Embargo period for NEUP projects will be set for 12 months after receipt of the Final Report, but can be extended.

Getting Access
If you are a PI or designated as a creator or delegate for a project in the NEUP portal, you can log in and access your project’s folder in NRDS.
PIs, creators, and delegates should already have an NEUP account.
Step 1: Before logging in to NRDS, make sure your account has multi-factor authentication (MFA) enabled. To do so, follow these instructions: Setting Up 2FA with Authenticator App. Email-only login authentication cannot be used for NRDS access.
Step 2: Log in to the NRDS Research Portal at nrds-portal.inl.gov using your NEUP credentials with the MFA. You will find the folder for your project.
Step 3: Your virtual workspace is ready to use. Upload and share files, access and manage your data, and run and execute your workflow. The system hosts in-house machine learning modules with dedicated GPUs and uses the NextCloud App for virtual desktop access and Globus Endpoint for external file transfer.

NRDS Public Site
NRDS Public Site – nrds.inl.gov
The public-facing site requires no login. Once a dataset is approved by the PI, its embargo date has passed, and it is reviewed by INL’s Laboratory Review System and DOE, it moves from the Research Portal to the public site.
The public site is an open-access gateway where data can be downloaded, previewed, or enhanced through AI tools. The goal of NRDS is to make all NEUP and NSUF data meet the “FpAIRe” guidance:
- Findable – NRDS files are sorted according to organization, project, and dataset. Search features allow users to find data using inputs such as tags, data formats, projects, and keywords.
- Peekable – Different data types, such as PDFs, spreadsheets, text files, images, videos, etc., can be viewed via the NRDS website without requiring any download.
- Accessible – Content can be assigned a licensing attribute such as the Creative Commons attribution (the default license), meaning the data is open-sourced and publicly available, with no account required.
- Interoperable – PIs and project members can upload and collaborate on datasets within their project on the NRDS Portal before having them become public.
- Reusable – Data is stored on HPC systems to allow for data to be used on other projects in the future.
Meeting Data Management Requirements
The Department of Energy Public Access Plan (June 2023) describes how DOE-funded research and digital data will become more open and available to the public. The plan identifies Data Management and Sharing Plans (DMSP) as the primary tool for defining how scientific data will be managed and shared.
In FY 2022, NEUP introduced a Data Management Plan (DMP) requirement for all R&D projects. NEUP is using NRDS as its long-term repository to improve retention and accessibility of data.

Active NEUP Projects
NRDS is available for all NEUP R&D projects FY17 to FY25, as well as any new projects. If you are a PI or designated as a creator or delegate for a project in the NEUP portal, you can log in to access the project’s folder in NRDS.
NEUP and DOE are actively working with current PIs and project teams to upload data—especially final reports. If your project is nearing completion, getting your data into NRDS now will help ensure it is it’s preserved and accessible for the future.

Uploading Your Data
NRDS accepts all file formats, which allows you flexibility in how you organize and upload your datasets. You’ll need to complete metadata, including licensing information, for every dataset you upload.
If you don’t have a digital object identifier, NRDS will assign it regardless of file type. For data to be useful, supplementary information should be co-located with the dataset to provide context about how the experiment was conducted, facility specifications, and any other context needed to understand and reproduce results. Use your best judgment on what to include.
DOE recognizes that many datasets will be quite large. NRDS has storage in place to accommodate extremely large datasets.
What to include:
- The raw dataset itself, in an open, machine-readable format where possible.
- A README file explaining the dataset’s contents and how to use it.
- Documentation of methods/procedures — how the experiment was conducted, instrument or facility specifications, calibration details.
- Related software, code, or tools needed to process or interpret the data.
- Any necessary data protections — de-identification, redaction of confidential or proprietary information.
Here are some possible types of reports, data, and data products you might include:
Project documentation
- Statement of work, if available.
- Experimental Plan/Design – include specifications used for the experiment.
- Final reports and Milestone reports.
- Student theses/dissertations.
- Experimental plans.
- Journal articles copyrighted by the PI.
- Pre-print or open-access journal articles.
- Conference presentations.
- CAD files of the facility, including equipment used, model numbers, configurations, and sensor locations.
Experimental and research data
- Raw and/or processed experimental data files containing the primary data generated during the experiment – for example materials characterization data (microstructural imaging, mechanical testing, irradiation testing), sensor/instrumentation logs, nuclear/radiological data, or analytical chemistry data.
- Simulation and modeling outputs, including source code, input/output files, and model validation datasets.
- Calibration and benchmark data used to verify instrument or model accuracy.
- Supplementary information on how to interpret raw data files, including column name descriptions and formatting notes.
- For processed data, the name and version of any software used for processing and analysis, a description of data processing steps (so the process is reproducible), and any scripts needed to repeat the processing.
What Not to Include
Some information should never be uploaded to NRDS including anything that may be legally restricted, could compromise security, privacy, or intellectual property, or items that simply don’t belong in what will become a finished, public dataset. When in doubt, check with NEUP before uploading.
Do not upload:
- Export-controlled information
- Classified or national security information
- Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)
- Personally identifiable information (PII)
- Proprietary or intellectual-property-sensitive data
- Data restricted by third-party agreements (e.g., confidentiality or licensing terms with a vendor or partner institution)
- Informal or unfinished notes not meant for public release
- Duplicate or outdated versions of a dataset, which can confuse users about which version is authoritative
Required Metadata Fields
The following fields are collected when entering a dataset on the NRDS Portal:
- Title (required) – a descriptive title that the dataset will be released as on the main NRDS website.
- Description (required) – useful information about the data, similar to a project abstract.
- Instruments – the device(s) used to collect or generate the data, including model numbers.
- Tags – keywords that describe the dataset and can be used as search filters.
- License (required) – the copyright license this dataset will be released under; a Creative Commons License can be selected in the NRDS system if no license has been created for the dataset.
- Project Association (required) – the project that this data was collected as part of and funded by.
- Embargo Expiration (required) – the date the data associated with this dataset will be released to the public; setting an embargo date allows the system to automatically release the data on that date. Note this is set at the dataset level, not the project level.
- Authors (required) – the author(s) of the dataset to be listed on the main NRDS website.
- Statement of Credit (required) – the statement others will use to cite your work.
- Dataset DOI – enter any DOI related to the project; If you don’t have a digital object identifier, NRDS will assign it regardless of file type.
Data Approval and Public Release Process
- PI approves all uploaded documents and confirms public release.
- PI confirms embargo date (12 months after receipt of final report is standard). Any changes to data can still be made during this time.
- Embargo date passes.
- Final DOE program review and INL Laboratory Review System for public release.
- Data moves from the NRDS Research Portal to the public NRDS site.
Embargo periods for NEUP projects will be set for 12 months after receipt of the project Final Report, with the option to extend on a case-by-case basis.
