Research and Development

NEUP seeks to align the nuclear energy research being conducted at U.S. colleges and universities with the Office of Nuclear Energy’s (NE) mission and goals. The Consolidated Innovative Nuclear Research (CINR) Research and Development (R&D) program supports university-led projects that focus on the needs and priorities of NE including fuel cycle, reactor concepts, and NE mission supporting research.

NEUP awards millions of dollars in research cooperative agreements each year through a two-part solicitation process that requires professors to submit pre-applications and then full proposals.

All proposals are subjected to a rigorous, independent peer review process to eliminate bias and ensure those that are funded are based on technical merit and relevance to NE’s mission.

Who Can Apply?

This is a university-led program.

When does this program open for applications?

Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) are released on varying dates, but this FOA typically opens for applications around June or July.

No-Cost Time Extensions

To apply for a No-cost Time Extension (NCE) , submit a completed NCE Request Form and submit to Tara Haack and cc: Crystal Sosalla. Once received, a budget replan, by milestone, will be sent out and will need to be completed and returned. If you need additional assistance, please contact NEUP.

One no-cost time extension request may be granted for up to 12 months, pending review and approval. No-cost time extensions should be requested as soon as the need is identified within the last year of the award.

Please allow a minimum of 8 weeks for processing an NCE. When the NCE modification has been processed, an email link will go out to the POCs on the award, directing them to Fed Connect to view the modification document. You may also go to Fed Connect to check status any time as well.
