Students can apply without their institutions being UNLP-approved. However, institutions with students receiving awards will need to be UNLP-approved by NE prior to the transfer of award funds for students. This is done by the university/college through a separate Funding Opportunity Announcement (DE-FOA-0002265) found at www.grants.gov. For more information on how to become a UNLP-approved institution, please visit the Scholarship and Fellowship Resources page at neup.gov.

Nuclear Energy University Programs (NEUP) relies on experts from academia, national laboratories, industry and government to review research and development proposals.

Reviewers are screened to ensure they are evaluating proposals in areas in which they have expert knowledge.  However, they are not allowed to review proposals in workscopes in which they have submitted an application.

All reviewers are volunteers and must abide by conflict of interest guidelines.  No honorariums are paid so that the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy (NE) can fund more university-led R&D awards.

Your participation as a reviewer is vital to the success of NEUP.

In 2023, the Office of Nuclear Energy (NE) released a new Request for Applications (RFA) for the Innovations in Nuclear Energy Research and Development Student Competition, seeking to recognize and award published graduate and undergraduate students for innovative nuclear energy research. This program was formerly known as the Innovations in Nuclear Technology R&D.

Students  submit one or more publications to be considered for any of the four categories in which they are eligible. Applicants may only win one competition per year.

  • Open Competition (Undergraduate and Graduate Students)
  • Competition for Graduate Students Attending Minority Serving Institutions or Belonging to an Underserved Community
  • Competition for Undergraduate Students Attending Minority Serving Institutions or Belonging to an Underserved Community
  • Undergraduate Competition

In addition to honoraria, travel and conference opportunities may accompany awards. First place award recipients in the open competition will have an opportunity to present their publication at the annual ANS Winter Meeting as well as other national meetings.

Applications were due on March 8, 2023. Awards were announced on June 15, 2023.
